How To Pick A Theme For Your Kids Birthday Party
Here at My Social Book, we’ve written before about how to create a photo book for children, including kids birthdays, but for many parents that’s a final step in quite a challenging process. That is the process of organising and picking a theme that can make the party a success.
It might be easy to brush off such a task, but there are plenty of factors that go into a themed birthday party that need to be taken into account.
After all, your child is special and they deserve the very best. If they walk into their lounge to find their spider-man themed birthday party is represented by a red and blue colour palette and a few undusted cobwebs, they’re not going to be very impressed.
Picking a theme and seeing it through needs to be thought out and planned. Only then will your kid enjoy the ultimate birthday party. Also, you will have some brilliant photos to put into a cute square photo book if you choose to – which we heavily advise you do!
With this in mind, here are three key ways you can choose and carry out the perfect birthday theme:
Narrow Your Child’s Interests Down To Five Key Favourites
The first thing you need to do is think about your child’s interests and narrow them down. That might involve going old-fashioned, getting a paper and pen and literally mapping out everything you know your child likes.
Once you have five that you are happy with, think about the birthday itself and which one will look best as a theme. For instance, some children like superheros. The same children also like watching the postman deliver parcels. Quite a big difference, right?
A superhero party is going to be far more suited to celebrations and excitement than a party revolving around letters and postman sacks.
Not to mention, when it comes to working out how to photograph your kid’s birthday, you will be glad for all the bold colours and fun decorations you will have at your disposal. On the other hand, though, it might be a more feasible option to go for a lower-key option than superheros. Especially once you have considered…
Your Budget
It’s all very well going for the most exciting theme, but you have to be aware: if you’re going for a big idea, your child will be expecting big. That task might seem a little tricky once you have sat down and considered the budget.
Remember, the birthday party isn’t just about decorations. It will involve food – potentially a lot depending on how many friends your child wants to invite – exciting cakes and plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained.
Speaking of kids, you need to work out how many children to invite to the birthday party. After all, your child might want lots of them and, for this reason, it might not be very feasible to host the birthday party in your own house. Of course, you might have a backyard that is big enough, but what time of year is your kid’s birthday? If it’s in the winter, that’s going to be no good. If it’s late summer or spring, that’s going to be too big a risk. A venue, then, is the most feasible option. But that doesn’t come cheap either.
All of these factors need to be taken into account when identifying your theme. Don’t give yourself any unnecessary struggles by avoiding budget calculation or – even worse – going too big on a small budget!
Think About And Talk To Your Child
You might think: well duh! Of course you’re going to think about your child when preparing their birthday party! Well, yes, of course. But that’s not what we mean.
If you have a so-so budget, you might decide to spend a fair bit of it on decorations around your chosen venue. This is great, but what happens when it comes to the little things? The table, the cups, the plates, the food?
These are essentially decorations that are going to be within inches of your child’s nose, so they need to be as good as they can be. Your kid is going to be far more interested in fun, quirky, tangible decorations rather than a collection of expensive balloons spelling out their name. Not to mention, if you’re thinking of going to a photo book maker after the occasion, these small details always pop and shine on the page.
As well as this, we should mention that actually discussing everything with your child is not something you should avoid. Unless this is a surprise party, your kid is going to want to have some input into how their birthday party plays out and looks.
Ask them to make the final decisions. Build their excitement and make them feel special by putting the power in their hands. That way, you can’t really go wrong. Well, you can. But you don’t need to think too hard about that! Just enjoy the experience and always do what you feel is right.
